How do you encourage your employees to engage in sustainability? Make it their job.
The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan began its life in Europe, so when it came to launching it in Australia, there were many oceans for it to cross, and a lot of explaining to do.
We started with the question, ‘how do you make sustainability part of everyone’s job?’ Which led to the answer, you make it their job.Instead of letting sustainability live in one department, we gave everyone at Unilever Australia the job title, Head of Sustainability. The new job came with cards, a desk plaque and a job manual explaining what it is, why it’s important and what you can do.
It also gave us a way to tell the story of what Unilever was already doing to all employees.

We made posters featuring real employees and held workshops and a launch.
Then we helped Unilever team up with the Sydney Festival to become their first ever sustainability partner and use what Unilever knew to make the festival a better event.We continue to work with Unilever to help match brands to actions that help make the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan happen.
